A name owned by a person or organization that is used as an Internet address to identify the location of particular Web pages.

Every domain name has a suffix that indicates which top level domain (TLD) it belongs to. There are a limited number of such domains. For example:

  • biz – Business
  • com – commercial business
  • edu – Educational institutions
  • gov – Government agencies
  • info – Information
  • mil – Military
  • mobi – Must be used for mobile-compatible sites in accordance with standards.
  • net – Network organizations
  • org – Organizations (nonprofit)
  • us – United States
  • de – Germany (Deutschland)

In some cases, especially in a highly competitive markets, it is advantageous to secure your domain names using several domain name suffixes (eg., yourbiz.com, yourbiz.net, yourbiz.biz). This will help prevent others from using a name that is very similar to yours and protects your brand from negative competition.
